The much-anticipated opening match of the Ghana Women’s Super Cup saw Berry Ladies FC narrowly lose 1-0 to Police Ladies FC in a hard-fought contest at the Ghanaman Soccer Center, Prampram. Both teams showed intent from the get-go, but it was the Police Ladies who capitalized on a critical opportunity to take the lead.
Berry Ladies, though possessing a team filled with 80% new players, pressed hard throughout the match. Their defense was solid, with the captain Regina Donkor, alongside Deborah Annoh and Victoria Amenyo, expertly tackling and intercepting several dangerous plays from the Police Ladies’ forwards. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, a momentary lapse during a corner kick led to the game’s only goal, leaving the defense and goalkeeper Grace Krofi Amoah caught off-guard.
The lone goal, which came from a well-delivered corner kick, stunned the Berry Ladies’ backline and gave Police Ladies FC the advantage they needed to secure the win. Despite trailing, Berry Ladies kept pushing forward. Prolific striker Zainab, who was a constant threat to the Police Ladies’ defense, had a standout performance until she was forced off the field due to multiple injuries. Her absence was deeply felt as Berry Ladies’ attacking pressure began to wane.
Coach Dora Zutah, who is newly at the helm of Berry Ladies FC, remained optimistic despite the defeat. In her post-match remarks, she praised the team’s fighting spirit, acknowledging that with so many new faces in the squad, this game serves as a vital step in their pre-season preparations. “I’m proud of the girls. We fought hard, and this is just the beginning. We’re building, and the chemistry will come in time.”
The loss may have been disappointing, but it is clear that Berry Ladies FC are only beginning to sync, and the team’s performance hinted at great potential for the season ahead. With lessons learned and more time to gel as a unit, Berry Ladies will undoubtedly come back stronger as the Super Cup continues.
Deborah Annoh of Berry Ladies Fc, won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) i.e Player of the Match because of her exceptional performance and leadership on the field.
