Berry Ladies FC’s first home match in the 2024/2025 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League season ended in a 3-1 defeat against Jonina Ladies FC at Madina Astroturf on match day 2. Despite a spirited performance, Berry Ladies struggled to convert their chances, while Jonina Ladies capitalized effectively on theirs.
The match saw an early goal from Jonina Ladies FC, which Berry responded to swiftly. In the 24th minute, Berry Ladies’ Jemima Twumwaa found the back of the net, leveling the score with a powerful header off an assist from Priscilla Sintim Agyemang. Priscilla’s initial strike rattled the crossbar, allowing Jemima to follow up and drive the ball home, reigniting Berry’s hope. Unfortunately, that would be the only breakthrough for Berry Ladies, as Jonina Ladies struck back twice, securing their lead and ultimately sealing a 3-1 victory.
Challenges on the Field
Berry Ladies were affected by a few tactical setbacks. Notably, Deborah Annoh, usually a standout in her natural defensive position, was placed as a midfielder in the first half, an adjustment that left her visibly frustrated. Assistant Coach Samuel Nii Kpani Addy’s explanation didn’t seem to satisfy Deborah, and this shift impacted the team’s defensive stability. Though she returned to her usual position in the second half, her reentry was short-lived as two yellow cards led to her ejection from the game, adding to the team’s mounting challenges.
Despite the loss, Jennifer Awuku, Jemima Twumwaa and Matilda Gyabaa, three new faces on the squad, delivered promising performances. Their efforts on the field were well-received by fans, showing potential for future matches.
Coach’s Perspective and Team Hurdles
With only 13 players available, including two goalkeepers, Coach Dora Zutah expressed frustration with ongoing player registration challenges that have hindered the team’s potential this season. The lack of substitutions forced each player to endure the full 90 minutes, impacting the team’s stamina and adaptability on the pitch. Coach Dora remains hopeful that registration issues will be resolved in time for the next match.
Berry Ladies FC will return to the pitch soon, determined to regroup and build on the glimpses of potential shown in this early stage of the season.
